Philosophy of Teaching

Students’ need to be met half way. They are future politicians, doctors, artists, and educators. Wanting to be able to reach all of my students on an academic level is a large part of the way I teach is that every student deserves to learn and a part of my job is to make sure that the students are having their needs met. With art education, there is a common misconception that every student in the class is a visual learner. I may have students that are auditory learners or visual learners and I need to be capable of working with their learning style so they can take in as much information as possible. To have kids wonder and question the world around them is a reward in itself. Teaching is the only profession that opens to all other professions.

Focusing on the students, the classroom will be a combination of society, subject, and child centered. Every class will be different and with a combination of the three, as a teacher, I will be able to find the best balance to fit in the classroom. Getting to my students on a personal basis, I will be able to fit the curriculum towards the student’s interests along with showing them artists that may have similar styles. The students will be focusing on subject matter has to do with society around them using technology, history education, and personal experiences to create unique works of art. This in all will give the students a better understanding of their surroundings. By merging child-centered, subject, and societal based education, the student is developing a sense of self and opinions that are unique to them.

Comprehensive Art Education is something that I believe will help the students learn the most out of the curriculum taught in the classroom. Students will be learning about aesthetics, art history, art criticism, and studio production along with video culture and technology. I believe these are important skills that students need to know to be successful in an art classroom. Along with learning these skills, students will be able to apply the criticism, production, and history to other classes along with personal and everyday situations. For example, with criticism, it teaches that to think critically and creatively about situations and to work towards an end goal. As a future educator, I need to want to help my students and reach their educational needs on every level. Art is a class that is often put to the side and is a subject that needs to be taken seriously by the students in the class. Skills and knowledge like color theory, design, analyzation, and creative thinking are all taught and learned in the class.

To be a teacher, it takes patience, skill, and a passion that shows through teaching and work. For a student to be able to see the passion and be able to trust you with their work is the biggest compliment I could receive as a teacher. I will not only teach students about art, but also how art corresponds to daily life will be the best accomplishment of my future teaching career. Focusing on the students is what we need to do as educators and I intend on doing so to the fullest extent.
